One of the great things about dermal fillers, as well as the majority of injectable cosmetic treatments we offer, is that they involve very little downtime and aftercare, providing a solution to unwanted signs of ageing without the need for surgery.
That said, dermal fillers are an injection-based treatment, meaning there’ll always be some side effects. But what’s normal, and what should you contact your practitioner about?
RISKS OF DERMAL FILLERS
At Eterno Aesthetics, our nurse practitioners are highly skilled and experienced. Their injection technique, along with the chosen dermal filler placement and premium products we use, means bruising is as minimal as possible.
A small amount of swelling around the treated areas is completely normal and to be expected, so plan your treatment with plenty of time ahead of holidays, weddings, and celebrations. We recommend treatments at least 4 weeks before any event to allow things to settle and for any tweaks to be made.
We ask that our patients allow a full month for residual swelling to subside and the treatment to fully integrate. We can’t make tweaks before this, because we can’t see the final results while swelling and bruising are still present.
PAIN AROUND TREATED AREA
With any injection-based treatment, we can apply an anaesthetic numbing cream before the procedure to keep pain minimal. There’s also a numbing agent contained within most of the filler products we use.
Patients do report some tenderness at the injection site(s), but this should subside over a few days, along with associated swelling and redness. Always flag any prolonged or severe pain after aesthetic procedures.
LUMPS & BUMPS
When it comes to injectable cosmetic treatments, you will see visible results while you are still in the clinic. However, products need time to settle under the skin. This can mean that you notice a few small lumps and bumps where the product has been placed, which is from the small amount of trauma caused by the needle. Swelling should subside over 7 – 10 days, and full tissue integration occurs by 4 weeks.
FILLER LOOKS LIKE IT IS WEARING OFF
In some cases of dermal filler treatment, it can feel like the results have lasted only a short period of time. This is because the swelling has subsided, which can feel like volume has been lost. For example, it’s quite common for lip swelling to continue for 48 hours after filler treatment and subside over the next few days.
To see your true results, allow at least 2 weeks for the swelling to settle. Often, more than one treatment session is required to achieve the desired result, which will be discussed during your consultation.
RISKS OF DERMAL FILLERS
Whilst small lumps and bumps under the skin are typical after a dermal filler treatment, if you are experiencing large areas of painful swelling, we recommend contacting the clinic for advice, as this may signify a mild reaction.
Far-spreading redness, increasing pain, and a high temperature are signs of infection, which usually develops within the first few days after treatment. It’s very uncommon to develop an infection with dermal fillers, but it’s important to visit a highly experienced licensed professional to minimise this risk.
You must keep the area clean for the first few days, avoid wearing makeup, and don’t touch injection sites for 24 hours.
Our aesthetic nurse prescribers are trained to deal with all types of side effects. We also provide personalised aftercare advice after every treatment, as well as a 24-hour emergency point of contact should you have any concerns.
PRE-TREATMENT CONSULTATION
We always recommend choosing a highly qualified medical practitioner for injectables, which is what you will find at Eterno Aesthetics.
Before any skin treatment, a consultation is essential. This dedicated time allows for an in-depth conversation around your desired results, an assessment of your skin, and a tailored recommendation of the most suitable method for your skin type and lifestyle.
We take a fully refundable deposit of £50 for all our consultations. Your deposit can be refunded in the clinic or redeemed against our treatments/products purchased after the consultation.
