Lip Fillers: What to Expect, Types, Benefits & Side Effects. Your Top Lip Filler FAQs Answered.

With the rise in popularity of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including dermal fillers, more and more people are opting for aesthetic treatments to enhance their natural features. Amongst the most requested treatments we provide at our Sheffield-based skin clinic is lip filler, which plumps, corrects, and smooths out wrinkles around the mouth.

While a consultation with your chosen aesthetic practitioner can tell you everything you need to know, we understand that you may want to find out as much as you can before considering booking a lip filler appointment. In the clinic, we get asked a lot about lip fillers. Here are the most frequently asked questions, answered by us.

DOES LIP FILLER HURT?

Any injection-based treatment isn’t going to be totally free of discomfort; however, most of our clients’ feedback is that the pain is not as bad as expected. Topical numbing cream is applied to your lips beforehand, which makes the treatment more comfortable.

WHAT IS LIP FILLER MADE FROM?

At Eterno Aesthetics, we provide dermal fillers made from a colourless gel called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring product that, as we age, our body stops producing. This is one of the reasons we see wrinkles appear, and the skin begins to sag. Ageing around the lip shows in the form of thinning, dehydration and lack of structure. Linear lines also appear above the lip, often called ‘smoker’s lines’, although non-smokers develop these as well.

IS LIP FILLER SAFE?

With all aesthetic treatments, there are risks associated, but when performed by an experienced, qualified practitioner, such as here at Eterno Aesthetics, it’s much safer.

There is very little regulation in the UK for those who can offer dermal filler treatments. In fact, anyone who advertises the treatment can do it! So be aware, because non-medical practitioners are not able to treat you or prescribe suitable medication should anything unexpected happen. It’s so important to thoroughly research who’ll be carrying out your lip filler treatment and the qualifications they hold, even if it means paying more.

IS IT NORMAL FOR LIPS TO BE UNEVEN AFTER FILLER?

The swelling that can often occur after lip fillers can cause the lips to look a little uneven for a short time. This doesn’t necessarily mean that anything has gone wrong and it may just take a little time for the product to fully settle and for residual swelling to subside.

HOW LONG WILL SWELLING LAST?

Swelling will usually subside within a few days, but we do ask clients to allow up to two weeks for this to fully go down. If you are still concerned after this time, we are always on hand to offer aftercare advice or welcome you back to the clinic for a review.

HOW CAN I STOP MY LIPS FROM BRUISING AFTER FILLERS?

Bruising is to be expected, but there are a few things you can do to help the recovery process. Ensuring you visit an experienced and highly trained practitioner is extremely important, as they will have a better anatomical understanding and be able to use certain techniques to minimise the chance of bruising as much as possible. After treatment, the area should be kept dry and clean, and ice can be applied to help speed up the healing process.

WHICH BRAND OF LIP FILLERS IS BEST?

At Eterno Aesthetics, we use the highest quality Juvéderm products to ensure the safest and most effective results for our clients. Juvederm VOLIFT has been specifically designed for the lips and mouth area, and its smoothness is perfect for adding gentle, natural-looking fullness. VOLIFT also contains a local anaesthetic, which works to make the process more comfortable alongside the topical numbing cream we use.

HOW MUCH DOES LIP FILLER COST?

We require everyone to attend an in-clinic consultation before lip filler treatment and offer a refundable consultation with one of our aesthetic nurses to discuss your goals.

A £50 deposit is required upon booking, but there’s no obligation to proceed with a lip filler treatment. We retain deposits for no shows or if you decide to go ahead with any advised procedures. In that case, the deposit will be deducted from the final cost of your treatment on the day, or it can be refunded if you feel that lip filler isn’t right for you.

Lip filler treatment at our Sheffield-based skin clinic starts from £180 per 0.5ml and £270 per 1ml. We also offer payment plan options.

At Eterno Aesthetics, we specialise in natural-looking results that enhance our clients’ features rather than change them.

We always take a conservative approach to lip filler, beginning with a touch of product and adding more if necessary. Generally, for new patients, we recommend just 0.5ml to add a subtle volume plump and fine-tune the lips.

It’s also important to us to consider every individual and develop a bespoke treatment plan for our clients, ensuring desired results are achieved. We therefore provide in-depth one-to-one consultations with every treatment package. With dermal filler, we can:

  • Volumise and plump the lips.

  • Define to balance the lip profile.

  • Improve lip shape.

  • Hydrate and smooth lip lines.

  • Balance the upper and lower lip ratio.

Side effects such as bruising and swelling are common, but to ensure a speedy recovery and avoid infection, you should avoid:

  • Strenuous exercise for one to two days.

  • Drinking alcohol or smoking straight after treatment.

  • Getting other cosmetic procedures, including facials, chemical peels or laser treatment for two weeks.

  • High-temperature environments, such as saunas or steam rooms, for two days.
  • High sodium (salty) foods.

  • Make-up, such as lipstick, for up to 24 hours.

  • Applying pressure to your lips for up to 24 hours (e.g., massaging).
  • Flying for up to a week.

Following our aftercare tips will drastically reduce bruising and swelling. If in doubt, speak to our expert practitioners, who are happy to help.

At Eterno Aesthetics, our hyaluronic acid fillers are non-permanent, which will naturally break down over time. We have a well-regarded reputation for creating natural-looking lips, helping you achieve your desired results without using too much filler. Not all lip fillers are dissolvable.

There’s a reason why lip fillers are so popular! For a relatively small sum, this minimally invasive treatment can enhance natural balance and facial symmetry. Our clients often tell us of the boost lip fillers give to their self-confidence.
